Surface-induced polarization at a chiral-nematic-substrate interface.

چکیده
A chiral nematic liquid crystal that is tilted by an angle θi with respect to a substrate is subjected to an ac electric field at frequency ω. The nematic director is found to oscillate azimuthally about the normal to the liquid crystal substrate interface at frequency ω, indicating that a nonzero polarization perpendicular to the molecular tilt plane exists at the interface. The interfacial polarization, anchoring strength coefficient, and bulk viscosity are obtained by measurements of the oscillation amplitude as a function of ω . a Author for correspondence. Chiral-induced polarization at a tilted nematic — substrate interface
An ac electric field at frequency ω is applied to a chiral nematic liquid crystal whose director is tilted by an angle θi with respect to the substrate normal. The nematic director is observed to oscillate at frequency ω azimuthally about the substrate normal, indicating the existence of a component of polarization Pi at the substrate that is perpendicular to the director and parallel to the su...
متن کاملDirector Structures in a Chiral Nematic Slab: Threshold Field and Pitch Variations
Abstract The liquid crystal director distribution is determined for a confined chiral nematic slab. The molecular director distribution of the field-controlled chiral nematic slab is directly calculated. The director profiles for the tilt and the twist angles, under different applied fields, are calculated in the slab with weak boundary conditions. Then, the dependence of the threshold field on...
متن کاملChiral induction in nematics A computer simulation study
We have studied chiral induction in a nematic in contact with a chiral surface using computer simulations. Nematic and surface particles have been modelled using the GayÈBerne (GB) potential considering, additionally, a short-range chiral term for the inducing surface. We Ðnd that, close to the chiral surface, a twist of the local director with respect to the surface molecules is induced, even ...
متن کاملFilling and wetting transitions of nematic liquid crystals on sinusoidal substrates.
Close to sinusoidal substrates, simple fluids may undergo a filling transition, in which the fluid passes from a dry to a filled state, where the interface remains unbent but bound to the substrate. Increasing the surface field, the interface unbinds and a wetting transition occurs. We show that this double-transition sequence may be strongly modified in the case of ordered fluids, such as nema...
متن کاملContinuous nematic anchoring transition due to surface-induced smectic order.
A continuous transition from tilted to homeotropic alignment at an interface is observed at a temperature T(a) for a nematic liquid crystal on cooling toward the nematic-smectic-A phase transition temperature. T(a) is found to depend on the treatment of the substrate. The behavior is examined theoretically in terms of a pair of competing easy axes (homeotropic and planar) and the tilt elasticit...
